Road trip in Australia: day 5, Newcastle

After our stopover in Port Macquarie and having visited our friends the Koalas, we set off towards Newcastle, a 3 hours’ drive from Port Macquarie.

We arrived in Newcastle at lunchtime and decided to stop in a garden for a picnic. We loved being able to do picnics almost anywhere in Australia. There are free tables and bathrooms, it’s really nice!

Once we had our energy restored, we went for a stroll near the cliffs to see Newcastle’s famous outdoor pool! The weather that day was a little grey and there were only a few people in the pool but it was nice to see! The waves were strong that day and we decided not to go in. Instead we went for a stroll in Newcastle city center.

We stopped at Darby Street to get into the mood of the city. It is a street with lots of nice shops and cafés. We actually stopped by the Depot Café for a milkshake, but beware because they are outrageously huge! A milkshake for two should be enough. The street was nice, we stopped a bit at each store, walked around … It was a nice time!

For Newcastle we booked two nights on Couchsurfing (yes, first time during our round the world!). We were lucky enough to stay in the home of two brothers who have a great house near Newcastle. We slept in their garage (nicely prepared with a bed, etc.) and shared with them the bathroom and kitchen. They were really nice and we had a good evening with them having dinner around a Spanish tortilla that we prepared ourselves. Mathew and Andrew loved the omelette, and it brought back memories of their trip to the Balearic Islands! We loved sharing these days with them.

We appreciated our day in Newcastle, since even if we didn’t do many things we had the time to rest and get to know our Couchsurfing hosts! The following day we saw kangaroos from up close, so don’t miss our next article!
